South Shields Gazette 12th January 2007
A fish and chip shop has gone green.
A revamp at Colmans in Ocean Road, South Shields, took three weeks and thousands of pounds to complete.
It included a new environmentally friendly deep fat fryer. The machine imported from Holland, uses up to 30% less energy than the standard model.
Director Richard Ord, 52, said “It was very apt that Environment Secretary David Miliband was at our grand opening because we like to think we’re doing our bit for the environment.
“We’ve created a really sleek, modern look for the place too, which I think could be the future of fish and chip shops.”
Colmans has won national recognition for its food in the past, with top chef Rick Stein hailing it as one of his favourite fish restaurants.
