Chippy Aims To Takeaway Prize

A top South Tyneside chip shop has received national recognition for its already award winning fish and chips.

Colmans, on Ocean Road, South Shields, has made it to the finals of the BBC Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards 2007.

The chippy has been entered in the best takeaway catergory, which includes stiff competition from organic food takeaways and delis across Britain.

Owner Richard Ord said: "We;re absolutely delighted. This nomination came completely out of the blue.

"To make it to the finals is very flattering, and it's all because of the fantastic people of South Shields. We're proud to serve them."

Judges, including food writer and restauranteur Alastair Little, have already descended on South Shields for a taste of what Colmans has to offer.

This is not the first time the chippy has received national recognition. Foreign Secretary and South Shields MP, David Miliband, recently named Colmans as his favourite restaurant.

The restaurant also won the North East Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award and is awaiting the result from the national finals, which will be announced later this month.

"Simplicity", said Mr Ord. "That's the secret of good fish and chips. From the sea and land to the plate with the miminum of fuss".

Colmans fish is locally sourced and sustainable, something it takes great pride in.

Mr Ord belives that the nation's favourite meal must be cooked with skill and passion.

He claims that making it to the finals not only brings recognition for the achievements of the chippy, but for South Shields and North East England.

The finals of the Food and Farming Awards will be held on Wednesday, November 28th in Birmingham, where the einners will be announced.
